Dr. Saidu Kanu was born on the 5th February in a small town called Njala located in the Moyamba District in the southern Province of Sierra Leone. Dr. Kanu acquired both his Primary and Secondary education from the University Experimental School and the University Secondary School respectively at Njala. He later enrolled with Njala University College in 1984 for a four years B.Sc Degree program in General Agriculture graduated in 1988. He gained employment with Barclays Bank where he rendered general clerical service for three years (1989 -1992). In 1993, Dr. Kanu proceeded to the Peoples Republic of China to pursue postgraduate studies in Guangxi Agricultural University and was awarded a Masters Degree in Animal Infectious Diseases and Prophylactic Veterinary Medicine with specialty in Veterinary Immunology. He returned home and gained employment with Njala University College in 1996 attached to the Animal Science Department where he taught for four years before returning again to the Peoples Republic of China in 2000 to pursue a Doctoral Degree with South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou. He was awarded a Doctorate Degree in Preventive Veterinary Medicine with specialty in Veterinary Protozoology in 2003. He returned home and continued his service with Njala University.
During his service at Njala University, Dr. Kanu was appointed as Head of the Animal Science Department in 2004. He also served as Associate Director in the Directorate of Planning, Research and Development where he acquired a wealth of experience. He was also the Deputy Marshal of the University Congregation Committee and served as the Secretary to the Academic Staff Association for over seven years. In 2004, Dr. Kanu collaborated with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to conduct research in Animal Production and Health in Sierra Leone. He was awarded a research grant for the control of economic important livestock diseases (Newcastle Disease and Pests des Petit Ruminants)in Sierra Leone and the same years was appointed a the Regional Coordinator for the Control of Transboundary animal diseases in Africa. In addition, Dr. Kanu has collaborated with other institutions of excellence including the Friedrich Loeffler Institute in Germany and University of Ibadan in Nigeria to conduct research in zoonotic diseases in Africa. Dr. Kanu has accomplished many consultancies in Agriculture and Livestock. He is currently the Consultant Director of Teko Livestock Research Centre of the Sierra Leone Agriculture Research Institute (SLARI).
In October 2014, Dr. Saidu Kanu was appointed as Principal of the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology, one of the prestigious Polytechnic institutions. His long years of research and administration have earned him a respectable status in society and he continues to render his service to the nation.
